Peter Meyer earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a Master of Jazz Performance degree through the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program. He also studied graduate level coursework in the Musicology program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a technical diploma at the Minnesota State College Southeast in band instrument repair. Throughout his musical career, he has worked in several areas of the music industry, including performance, education, and musical instrument repair.
While his primary instrument is the bass, Peter is a skilled multi-instrumentalist who plays and teaches strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. He regularly performs in the orchestras at Diamond Head Theatre and Manoa Valley Theatre, and is also a member of the award-winning band Console: The VGM Band. In addition, he serves as the Music Leader and Choir Director at Temple Emanu-El Honolulu. Fascinated by many genres and styles of music, he brings a broad and versatile musical perspective to both performance and teaching.
Peter Meyer grew up in a musical household with both parents working as professional musicians, so he began to learn musical skills from an early age. In this environment, he grew to love music through an immersive approach rather than by following strict teaching methods. Peter uses this way of learning about and loving music simultaneously as the vehicle for introducing students to the world of musical performance.
As a highly experienced educator, Peter has worked with students of all ages, from preschool-aged students to adults who are well into their 80s. He is motivated by helping students find a love of music, and their goals for playing, whether it is an introduction to the instrument or preparing for a music school audition, can always be served through the mindset of recognizing the joy of a life filled with music.
