RYUTEKI FLUTE LESSONS

We offer personalized ryūteki lessons for students interested in the elegant bamboo flute of the Japanese imperial court tradition (gagaku). Lessons focus on breath control, tone production, traditional repertoire, and the unique performance practices of gagaku music. As a performing member of the Hawaii Gagaku Kai, our instructor brings authentic, hands-on experience to his teaching while tailoring instruction to each student’s goals. Whether students are exploring Japanese traditional music for the first time or seeking to deepen their understanding of gagaku performance, they receive supportive, engaging, and individualized instruction..

Our teaching philosophy centers on helping each student discover and cultivate their own unique musical voice. Lessons are tailored to the goals and interests of each individual, whether they wish to pursue classical performance, jazz, musical theater, world music, school ensembles, or personal enrichment. Through modern teaching methods and effective practice strategies, students develop the skills needed to succeed in a wide variety of musical settings.

Students build a strong foundation in essential musical skills, including note reading, rhythm, ear training, interpretation, and ensemble awareness. Flute-specific instruction focuses on breath support, tone production, articulation, finger technique, phrasing, and musical expression. As students advance, lessons may also incorporate improvisation, stylistic interpretation, and performance skills, helping them become versatile and well-rounded musicians.

Whether a student’s goal is preparing for auditions, participating in school ensembles, exploring traditional Japanese music, or simply enjoying music as a lifelong pursuit, we provide personalized instruction that balances technical excellence with creative exploration. Our goal is to inspire students to grow as musicians while developing a lasting appreciation for the diverse musical traditions these instruments represent.

My son has been taking violin lessons at Honolulu Music Lessons Workshop with Kumu Ben for greater than a year now, and the experience has been fantastic! The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and patient, making each violin lesson engaging and fun. We've already seen remarkable progress in his skills and confidence. Our experience has been so great that we even enrolled our other child for piano lessons! The environment is warm and encouraging, perfect for young learners. I highly recommend this studio for anyone looking to start or enhance their music journey!

I found this music school during a google search when I was looking to start taking guitar seriously. I had been playing casually (not very well) self taught for years until I signed up for lessons with Hans Fahling. I was blown away by Hans's teaching method as he was able to tailor lessons to my goal of being able to finally sing and play guitar at the same time. He is an incredible teacher and though I am taking a brief haitus due to career demands I look forward to resuming lessons as soon as possible and cannot recommend his lessons enough. Hans incorporates theory and form exercise in his lessons while balancing those core concepts with playing along to songs that you are interested in learning to keep learners engaged. Worth every penny. Mahalo Hans!

I started my journey for vocal improvement eight months ago from a place of severe anxiety and unsteady foundations. I could never have imagined singing intentionally for one person alone in a sound proof room, let alone a crowd of people, but that's where I started: in a sound proof room in front of one person. That person was Mel Kay, a brilliant music teacher in both talent and attitude. She is patient and kind, skilled at her art and inspiring that of others, and is versatile in her directions and ideas for growth. In a short time, I found myself moving from a feeling of trepidation to one of excitement before lessons because of her warm approach to teaching, and six months later I was performing on stage at a local bar! I just returned from a trip abroad where I played at a concert for hundreds of onlookers, successfully, which I never would have dreamed could be a reality I actually enjoyed living through. Though I was the one who put in the work, the only reason I was able to accomplish this dream is due to Mel's tutelage. I could not give a stronger recommendation for a vocal coach to someone needing help on their journey through music. Thanks Mel!
